Perth, Australia and Hong Kong, China
While others on the WTA Tour were busy at tournaments in Australia, Venus and Serena Williams were also busy. Venus was in Hong Kong playing the annual exhibition held there while baby sister Serena was busy in Perth, playing the 20th Annual Hopman Cup competition with her partner, Mardy Fish.
Venus played extremely well all week dispatching of such competition as Elena Dementieva before defeating Maria Sharapova in the Finals, 6-4, 6-3. The two hadn't played since their Wimbledon 4th Round meeting last July and Venus was eager to show the world that she will be a threat come the Australian Open.
As for Serena, she arrived late to Perth after being sick earlier in the week but did arrive and played fantastic tennis against opponents such as Lucie Safarova, Alicia Molik and Jelena Jankovic. The team of Mardy Fish and Serena Williams defeated Jankovic and Djokovic, 7-6, 6-2 in the Finals to take home the lovely diamond studded balls and the Hopman Cup for USA for the 5th time.
Next week are the two tournaments right before the Australian Open begins on January 14th, from Melbourne. Next week events in Sydney and in Hobart take place. Each a good step towards confidence at the Australian Open.
