Today began the first day of action at the 2008 Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the season, with many of the top women in action. Big names today that competed were defending champion, Serena Williams, world number 1, Justine Henin, Lindsay Davenport, Jelena Jankovic, Maria Sharapova, Nicole Vaidasova and others.
Serena Williams opened on Rod Laver Arena versus an opponent she never had played before, Jarmila Gajdosova of Australia. Serena looked sluggish in between great runs, but is expected to get better with each round. Debuting a new short white tunic and fuscia colored bike tights and headband. Serena won the match, 6-3, 6-3.
Justine Henin also had serving troubles in her 6-2, 6-2 victory over Aiko Nakamura of Japan. Maria Sharapova looked sharp in her serving and groundstrokes with her victory over Jelena Kostanic Tosic of Croatia, 6-4, 6-3.
Lindsay Davenport looked like she was having an easy day but things went wrong, possibly a loss of concentration or the wind, but she did eventually defeat Sara Errani of Italy, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. The drama of the day came from Vodafone Arena, where Jelena Jankovic was down and out but some how turned it around against her young opponent, Tamira Paszek. The 17 year old held match points but could not close the door, with the number 3 see, Jankovic winning, 2-6, 6-2, 12-10.
The new plexicushion true blue courts were all the range on Day 1 of the Australian Open and we look forward to tomorrow's action with more top women playing, including Venus Williams, Ana Ivanovic, Svetlana Kuznetsova and more.
