Safina Wins L.A., Errani Wins Second Title in Slovenia!

July 27th, 2008 Los Angeles, USA and Portoroz, Slovenia

The US Open Series continued in Los Angeles and the rest of the women who rather play elsewhere to gain experience for the US Open in August made more stops this week. Serena Williams was headlining in Los Angeles until she pulled out due to a knee problem. Jelena Jankovic looked primed to take the Number 1 spot from Ana Ivanovic but it didn't happen as she lost early, more than likely due to nerves and pressure.

It was Dinara Safina, who had won in Berlin earlier this year and also made the Finals of Roland Garros who would take the title in Los Angeles and claim the top spot of the US Open Series. With her win, she gained 95 points. Safina defeated Flavia Pennetta in the Finals, 6-4, 6-2 to claim the East West Bank Classic. Safina looks primed to continue her good form into Montreal next week and perhaps into the Olympics the week after that.

In Slovenia at the Banka Koper Slovenia Open, it was Sara Errani who had just won her first title two week prior who would come out as the champ yet again. Playing stellar tennis on the hard courts just as she had on the clay courts before, Errani came out on top with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over clay court specialist Anabel Medina Garrigues. The Slovenian event is not part of the US Open Series.

Next week the tour stops in at Montreal a Tier I event to try and gain the last bit of practice before the Beijing Olympics begin on August 8th.
