Sharapova Claims 3rd Grand Slam Crown, Ivanovic Loses 2nd Grand Slam Final!

January 26th, 2008

Melbourne, Australia

Two weeks ago, the tennis world made its move to Melbourne, with every WTA Tour player trying to compete for that coveted prize of winning a Grand Slam tournament. During the course of the event, there were some surprises and some upsets, which only added to the appeal of what the Grand Slams have to offer. However at the end of the day, only one would be raising up the trophy.

The women's final was contested between Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic. For Sharapova, she was trying to win her 3rd Major and 1st Australian Open crown. Ivanovic had reached the Finals at Roland Garros last year, and was looking to get her 1st Grand Slam. After a back and forth first set, Sharapova took charge and continued her perfect form, taking the opening set 7-5.

The second set was less dramatic as Sharapova took and early break and lead, and ran away with it, never looking back and claiming the Australian Open Championship. For Sharapova, it is a 3rd Grand Slam, she had previously won the 2004 Wimbledon Championships and the 2006 US Open Championships. The only Grand Slam now missing from her cabinet is the elusive Roland Garros title, where she has never made the Finals.

For Ivanovic, she gets the satisfaction of being the Number 2 player in the world, and reaching her 2nd Grand Slam Final in less than a year. However, its also her second Grand Slam Final loss in less than a year. She lost a dismal match to Justine Henin at last year's Roland Garros. For her fans, they can only hope she continues to learn and grow, and maybe one day holding up her own Grand Slam trophy.

Next week the WTA Tour has Fed Cup, and the week after that, events in Paris and Pattaya City will make their rounds. Its a long way till the next Grand Slam, which isn't until the end of May, until then, there is plenty of tennis to be played!

Day 11 at the 2008 Australian Open!

January 24th, 2008

Melbourne, Australia

Day 11 of the 2008 Australian Open didn't really offer up many surprises like the last couple of days. What was expected to happen, did happen and after Day 11, the tennis world has two women who will face off the the Australian Open championship on Saturday.

The first match on Rod Laver was Maria Sharapova taking on the pesky Serbian, Jelena Jankovic who had taken out the defending Champion, Serena Williams just two days before. Sharapova started strong going up 5-0 in the first set before closing it out 6-3. The next set once again was all Sharapova as she crushed the Number 4 player in the world, 6-3, 6-1. Sharapova moves into her 2nd consecutive Australian Open final.

The next match featured Ana Ivanovic vs. Daniela Hantuchova, which everyone thought would be easy, but turned out to be quite different. Hantuchova came out on fire, blasting away everything she could while Ivanovic looked tense and tight. Hantuchova eventually led 6-0, 2-0 before Ivanovic came back. After that it was all Ivanovic with Hantuchova trying to stay in the match. Ivanovic bested Hantuchova and won the match 0-6, 6-3, 6-4. She moves into her 2nd Grand Slam Final, her first being last years Roland Garros.

The Women's Final will be Maria Sharapova vs. Ana Ivanovic. The head to head is 2-2, with their most important meeting coming at last years Roland Garros Semi-Final where Ivanovic destroyed Sharapova 6-2, 6-1. Now though, the two are different players and it should be an interesting Final to watch and see who takes the biggest title so far played this year.

Day 10 at the 2008 Australian Open!

January 23rd, 2008

Melbourne, Australia

Day 10 of the Australian Open was somewhat surprising with the women's Quarter-Finals being played to complete the Semi-Final line up. The marquee match ups of the day featured Ana Ivanovic vs. Venus Williams and Daniela Hantuchova vs. Agnieszka Radwanska.

The first match on Rod Laver Arena, featured the young Slovak take on the young Polish girl. The match was very one sided and not very heavily contested so it was not surprise when the winner was announced, it was the seed and who everyone was expecting. Daniela Hantuchova dispatched Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-2, 6-2.

The second match of the day was supposed to be more heavily contested, and it was. However with Venus Williams winning the last two meetings between the two at Wimbledon and the US Open, everyone expected Williams to blast through to the Semi-Finals. That would not be the case as Williams made many errors and wasn't playing the game she normally does. Ivanovic defeated Williams 7-6, 6-4. The Williams sisters faced a tough 24 hours with Serena losing, the two of them losing in doubles and then Venus losing as well.

Day 11 will feature the Women's Semi-Finals with mouth watering matches including Maria Sharapova vs. Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic vs. Daniela Hantuchova. The winners will be for the first time in 6 years, since 2002, with names not Williams or Henin in the Finals.

Day 9 at the 2008 Australian Open!

January 22nd, 2008

Melbourne, Australia

Day 9 of the 2008 Australian Open was definitely a shocker for the fans as two of the heavy favorites for the title bowed out with nothing but a whimper. And two others will move on to meet each other in a Slam for the first time in their careers.

It was Jelena Jankovic who struck the first blow of the day when she ousted defending champion, Serena Williams handily with a 6-3, 6-4 win. Williams never looked comfortable and seemed irritated, annoyed and wanting to be away from Melbourne Park. Serena had a blister on her foot, and it was no help as Jankovic kept making Williams play more and more shots.

For Williams this is the 4th consecutive Grand Slam in a row that she has lost in the Quarter-Finals. For Jankovic it is the first time she reaches the Semi-Finals in Melbourne, and her third career Grand Slam Semi-Final, also reaching ones at the US Open in 2006 and at Roland Garros 2007. Jankovic won't have an easy time in the Semi-Final and is the underdog.

Maria Sharapova showed the tennis world that she means business and that she won't go down lightly during this Grand Slam. Sharapova was facing off against Justine Henin who was on a 32 match win streak and who hadn't lost since the Semi-Finals of Wimbledon last July. It didn't matter as Sharapova played a near flawless match to dispatch the world number 1.

Sharapova used her power and some soft hands at the net to keep Henin back and away from playing her full game. It was very similar to how Serena Williams defeated Justine Henin last year in the Finals down under. Sharapova moves to yet another Grand Slam Semi-Final with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Henin.

Day 10 of the Australian Open will feature the other 2 Quarter-Finals matches with Daniela Hantuchova vs. Agnieszka Radwanska and Ana Ivanovic vs. Venus Williams. The crowd can only hope for more competitive matches.

Day 8 at the 2008 Australian Open!

January 21, 2008

Melbourne, Australia

Day 8 at the 2008 Australian Open wasn't exactly an exciting one, rather it was pretty dull with all the expected winners, moving through to the Quarter-Finals and moving one step closer to the championship match.

Ana Ivanovic started on Rod Laver Arena, facing off against Caroline Wozniacki of Poland. Ivanovic who is a heavy favorite in the match didn't disappoint as she dispatched the young Polish girl with a 6-1, 7-6 scoreline.

Venus Williams was next on court taking on Marta Domachowska, also of Poland and didn't have many problems with her. Venus played well, though she was broken a couple of times but still managed to win the match with a 6-4, 6-4 scoreline. Williams vs. Ivanovic is an anticipated Quarter-Finals match.

The only other noticeable name that was playing on this day was Daniela Hantuchova who was facing off against Maria Kirilenko. The match started in Kirilenko's favor as she got off to a great start. However, Hantuchova calmed down and played her game which was enough to get through and win the match 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Day 9 will feature two mouth watering encounters, the Quarter-Finals matches between Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic as well as Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova. Day 9 should have some good tennis.

Day 7 at the 2008 Australian Open!

January 20th, 2008

Melbourne, Australia

Day 7 of the Australian Open kicked off and everyone knows what that means. Round of 16 action for one half of the women's tour and also the halfway point here at the years first Grand Slam.

Serena Williams, the defending Champion had a tough Round of 16 opponent, probably the toughest out of everyone. It was Nicole Vaidasova who stood in her way to getting to the final 8 down in Melbourne. Everyone was expecting a tough match, but Serena decided otherwise and used her many weapons to dispatch Vaidasova easily, 6-3, 6-4. Serena is now in the Quarter-Finals once again.

At night, Jelena Jankovic was facing off against Casey Dellacqua who had upset Amelie Mauresmo a few days prior. The match was back and forth in the first set with the Australian having chances to take the lead, but Jankovic had none of that and took out Australia's last female hope, 7-6, 6-1. She now goes on to face Serena Williams.

Justine Henin had the easiest of the Round of 16 draw when she faced off against Su-Wei Hsieh. The match as anyone would have thought did not last very long and Henin marched along with a 6-2, 6-2 win.

Maria Sharapova was having to face off against Elena Dementieva, and though many didn't expect a tough match, they would of expected better than the drubbing that was handed out. Maria Sharapova destroyed Elena Dementieva, 6-2, 6-0. Sharapova and Henin now face in the Quarter-Finals.

Day 6 at the 2008 Australian Open!

January 19th, 2008

Melbourne, Australia

Day 6 of the Australian Open was a very active day, but not a necessarily good one for a few of the women's seeds. In the last 2 days, many of the more important names have all fallen and left the door wide open for players who usually don't get many good chances to go far at a major.

Maria Kirilenko made a big splash and took a huge step in her progress as a serious player when she defeated the number 6 seed, Anna Chakvetadze on Rod Laver Arena in a nicely contested 3 set match. The two Russians were facing each other and for a change, Kirilenko went for her shots and won the match, 6-7, 6-1, 6-2.

Later on that day, much later on, Venus Williams was taking on Sania Mirza which proved also to be a battle. However Venus did not want to be one of the seeds who would lose and ended up winning the match and moving to the Round of 16 for the first time since 2005. Venus won the match, 7-6, 6-4.

On Vodafone Arena, the largest upset on the women's side occured when Agnieszka Radwanska defeated the number 2 seed for the second slam in a row. She defeated Maria Sharapova at the US Open in the 3rd Round and this time defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova. The match was surprisingly lopsided and it seemed the Kuznetsova didn't have much in her, and went down an easy, 6-3, 6-4.

Ana Ivanovic continued her march through the tournament, trying to do her personal best down under as she faced off against Katarina Srebotnik. The match wasn't contested for long as the Serbian got off to a great start and ended up winning, 6-3, 6-4.

On Day 7, the Round of 16 begins with Serena Williams vs. Nicole Vaidasova, Jelena Jankovic vs. Casey Dellacqua, Justine Henin vs. Su-Wei Hsieh and Elena Dementieva vs. Maria Sharapova.

Big names Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova are probably playing the best out of the field for the moment. The two may face in the Semi-Finals if they both get there.

Justine Henin opened up action at Rod Laver Arena facing off against the always tricky Francesca Schaivone of Italy. The match was back and forth and Henin wasn't playing her best tennis. However with her skill, the world number 1 did win and moved into the Round of 16 with a 7-5, 6-4 victory.

Jelena Jankovic who hasn't looked too impressive down under once again had a tough match in her quest to win her first grand slam title. The Serbian was facing off against Virginie Razzano, and was taken to a 3 set battle, but eventually won, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.

The only upset of the day came during the night session when young Australian Casey Dellacqua defeated the 2006 champion, Amelie Mauresmo in a three set battle, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Mauresmo hasn't reached the Quarter-Finals of a Grand Slam since the US Open in 2006.

She was facing a tricky opponent but defeated Tsvetana Pironkova, 7-6, 6-2.

Day 3 of the Australian Open!

January 16th, 2008

Melbourne, Australia

Today, Day 3 of the first Grand Slam of the year kicked off with soaring temperatures and 2nd Round action. Big names were in action today including Serena Williams, Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova. The action wasn't as hot as Day 1, but still was plenty.

Serena Williams played on Vodafone Arena for the first time this tournament as she faced off a fiesty and tough Chinese opponent in Meng Yuan. The young qualifier was hitting tremendous shots, making Williams run back and forth for every point, working her hardest. Serena though to her credit was returning all the shots and was clearly winded. However, the defending champion prevailed and moved onto the 3rd Round with a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

Justine Henin opened up action on Rod Laver Arena, facing off against Olga Poutchkova, in a slight battle. Henin seemed to be having an easy time before being struck with a loss of concentration. Henin though continued her form and went on to win the match, 6-1, 7-5.

Others in action during the day session were Nicole Vaidasova who dismantled local favorite, Alicia Molik, 6-2, 6-3. Jelena Jankovic had a much easier time today and had no problems in defeating Edina Gallovits, 6-2, 7-5. Amelie Mauresmo who was the champion here two years ago had a bit of trouble in her 2nd Round match and had to fight for a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Yaroslava Shvedova.

The night session match was billed to be something extraordinary. Two former number 1 players facing off against each other in the 2nd Round of a Grand Slam. It was the earliest that it ever happened. Maria Sharapova and Lindsay Davenport would do battle to see who would move on to the 3rd Round. Unfortunately for Davenport, who wasn't playing anywhere near her best, Sharapova completely dismantled her and defeated the new mom, 6-1, 6-3.

Day 4 commences tomorrow with the likes of Venus Williams, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Ana Ivanovic and Daniela Hantuchova all trying to make it to the 3rd Round.
