Serena Captures 9th Grand Slam, 3rd US OPEN!

September 7th, 2008 New York City, USA

The Women's Final was held one day and one hour later than usual because of horrible weather on Saturday. So Sunday at 9 p.m. Eastern Time, Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic took the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium to compete for the coveted US Open championship. It marked Williams fouth final at the US Open, winning in 1999 and 2002, and losing to sister Venus in the final in 2001. For Jelena it was her first ever Grand Slam final.

The first set was all Williams, quickly using controlled aggression to get up to a 5-2 lead. Jankovic had other plans and halted Williams slightly, getting back to 5-4. But Serena held strong and finally one the first set 6-4. When she moved up 1-0 in the second set, it all seemed to be going downhill for the Serbian. However to Jankovic's credit she was poised and held herself tough out there, better than a lot of first time Slam finalists do. At one point Jankovic was leading 5-3 in the second set and even had a 0-40 lead on Serena's serve. Three set points, but all evaporated and Serena was up 6-5 in an instant. It was there where Serena had enough and won the championship 7-5. For Serena, it was a long road back from here Australian Open in 2007. It was also her second consecutive Grand Slam final in over 5 years. With the win, Serena Williams ties Monica Seles with 9 Grand Slam titles. Also Serena is now the number 1 player in the world. For Jankovic she can take credit for making the US Open final and playing a great match. Now the world waits till January for the Australian Open.

Serena, Jankovic To Battle For US Open Crown!

September 5th, 2008 New York City, USA

The women's Semi-Finals were played on a windy, humid day in New York City, conditions that aren't favored for anyone. Jankovic and Safina each called out at least once in frustration at the wind, sharing the opinion of many who were in attendance at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center. First up to play on Arthur Ashe Stadium were Elena Dementieva and Jelena Jankovic. Dementieva was looking to reach her third ever Grand Slam Final and second here after reaching her first back in 2004. For Jankovic, she was on a mission to try and reach her first Grand Slam final after failing to do so in four previous Semi-Final encounters at Grand Slams. Dementieva started more steady of the two players, getting an early break in the first set and leading 4-2 at one point. However on this windy day, Jankovic was doing a lot of retrieving which annoyed Dementieva and caused many errors and simply broke down the Russian. Jankovic went on a tear and won the first set 6-4. Dementieva could do nothing but think about how she lost the set. In the second set, the players traded four straight breaks of serve before Jankovic finally held. It was a more consistent set, Jankovic finally took the lead 5-4 and won the match, 6-4. It will be Jankovic's first Grand Slam Final.

The next match came out in arguably even windier conditions, which did not favor either Serena Williams or Dinara Safina. The Russian has had a dream season to date winning titles at Berlin, Los Angeles and Montreal and getting a Silver Medal at the Olympics, not to mention a Finalist showing at Roland Garros last June. Serena Williams hadn't been passed the Quarter-Finals of a Grand Slam since the Australian Open in 2007. She had something to prove, even if she didn't admit it. The match was going on serve until 4-3, when Serena broke to take a 5-3 lead. Williams was playing safe, consistent tennis while Safina was hitting unforced error after error. Williams won the first set 6-3. In a blink of an eye, Serena was up 5-1 in the second set before Safina held serve and made Williams serve out the match. Serena with great poise and determination did just that only needing 1 Match point to win. Williams is now in her fourth US Open championship match and will be looking for her third overall US Open and 9th Grand Slam. It won't be easy, with weather conditions looking to worsen, with a possible final on a windy Sunday instead. Williams and Jankovic are 3-3 in head to head's so it will be a tough match for either party, who will win? It's up to the weather and the better player on that day.

Safina, Serena Set Up Semi-Final Date!

September 3rd, 2008 New York City, USA

On this day would be one of the most anticipated women's Quarter-Final matches of recent memory at the US Open. Venus and Serena Williams would face off against each other during the night session. It would be their 18th match against each other and their 11th meeting at a Grand Slam. But first during the day session, Dinara Safina would take on Flavia Pennetta, a surprise final eight participant.

Safina controlled most of the match with her heavy ground strokes and dominating form that she has had as of late. Safina quickly won the first set, 6-2. By this time, Pennetta was looking flushed and frustrated. Her first US Open Quarter-Final was not going her way. It continued on this course as Safina continued her aggression and went on to win the second set, 6-3. The Russian now moves on to only her second Grand Slam Semi-Final and first at the US Open. With title wins in Los Angeles and Montreal as well as a Silver medal in Beijing, Safina is looking to continue with her amazing summer.

What went wrong with Venus Williams? That is the question everyone is probably asking themselves today. With ten set points in hand and eight break points, it wasn't Venus Williams who was moving on at the US Open, but younger sister Serena. Venus was definitely the more aggressive player all night, forcing Serena back and always threatening her serve by staying inside the baseline. Serena to her credit stayed with Venus, using her controlled aggression to make less errors and ultimately cause Venus to be the one spraying balls. Serena barely edged out the first set, 7-6(6). In the second set, Venus continued to play better, but Serena played smarter and ultimately it came down to Serena's grit and Venus choking the match away. Serena won the second set, 7-6(7). Serena now goes on to face Dinara Safina in the Semi-Finals. Williams lost to Safina earlier this year in the spring in Berlin. Serena will be trying to look for revenge.

Dementieva, Jankovic Set Up Semi-Final Clash!

September 2nd, 2008 New York City, USA

The ninth day of the US Open only featured two matches, Elena Dementieva taking on Patty Schnyder and Jelena Jankovic contesting against Sybille Bammer. The two most likely victors were the actual victors this time around as both Dementieva and Jankovic moved on to the Semi-Finals. Dementieva dispatched an outplayed Patty Schynder with a 6-2, 6-3 scoreline, which some would say was too easy. However Dementieva is now on an eleven match winning streak and is looking good to go to the Finals.

Jelena Jankovic played during the night session on Louis Armstrong Stadium, where she took on Sybille Bammer. Jankovic looked strong in her match, out hitting Bammer and simply looking and playing some of the best tennis she has all of the last week and a half. Jankovic moves on to her 2nd US Open Semi-Final with a 6-1, 6-4 victory. I still give the edge to Dementieva to make it to the Finals and for Jankovic to continue searching for her first Grand Slam Final.

All Williams Quarter-Final Set, Safina Moves On!

September 1st, 2008 New York City, USA

The 8th day of the Us Open kicked off today with enticing matches between Dinara Safina and Anna Lena Groenefeld as well as Venus Williams and Agnieszka Radwanska. Serena Williams and Amelie Mauresmo were also in action in their Round of 16 matches. All the women were trying to fill in the Quarter-Finals on the women's side.

Dinara Safina had a tough first set against the German Groenefeld but it was all Safina in the second set as she cruised to a 7-5, 6-0 victory. Safina now moves on to the Quarter-Finals of the US Open against Flavia Pennetta who took out Amelie Mauresmo 6-3, 6-0. Safina is expected to reach her first US Open Semi-Final with not much trouble. Who will she meet will be the big question come Wednesday.

Venus Williams was up against the number 9 seed, which many thought would provide a tough, entertaining match up. Williams had other plans as she out powered and out ran her Polish opponent to a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Venus is looking sharp heading into the Quarter-Finals as she did last year. Younger sister Serena Williams also is looking sharp, not having any trouble whatsoever in her Round of 16 match against Severine Bremond of France. Serena, much like Venus just outhit and out played her opponent. Serena moved on with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Now the All Williams Quarter-Final is set. It will be a tough one to call, Serena will be looking to get revenge for her Finals loss at Wimbledon to Venus.

Tomorrow the Quarter-Finals kick off with Elena Dementieva taking on Patty Schnyder and Jelena Jankovic facing off against Sybille Bammer. Expect Dementieva and Jankovic to move on to the Semi-Finals.

Dementieva, Jankovic En Route to Semi-Final Showdown, Half of Quarter-Finals Set!

August 31st, 2008 New York City, USA

Half of the women's Quarter-Finals were set today when Jankovic, Dementieva, Schnyder and Bammer moved into the final 8 at the US Open. For most, the bottom half of the women's draw has been the weaker half since the beginning of the tournament and with the entrants of Bammer and Schnyder into the Quarter-Finals, many would say that all the criticism has come to be true.

Jelena Jankovic survived a slug fest with up and coming Caroline Wozniacki, being forced to go to three sets. Jankovic's experience helped her in this situation with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Wozniacki who must be tired from winning New Haven last week and now getting to the Round of 16 here in New York City. Jankovic has now made the Quarters of the US Open, three years in a row.

Elena Dementieva would be the star of the night session when taking on China's Na Li. Li and Dementieva both had success at the recent Olympic games and were looking to continue the trend. Dementieva who has been on a high ever since winning the gold medal continued her strong form and blasted her way passed Li, with a 6-4, 6-1 scoreline. Patty Schnyder had a tough Round of 16 against Katarina Srebotnik who took out Svetlana Kuznetsova in the round before. The Swiss won the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Sybille Bammer also had a tough encounter against Marion Bartoli, who was responsible for taking Linsday Davenport out in the third round. Bammer defeated Bartoli, 7-6(3), 0-6, 6-4. It all looks to be pointing to a Dementieva vs. Jankovic Semi-Final.

Tomorrow the rest of the round of 16's take place with Serena Williams and Venus Williams looking to book a spot against each other in the Quarter-Finals and with Dinara Safina and Amelie Mauresmo trying to make the last eight as well.

Williams Sisters Storm Through, Safina Struggles!

August 30th, 2008 New York City, USA

The sixth day of competition kicked off at Flushing Meadows, with half of the grandslam just about complete and the other half to come, the Williams sisters and Dinara Safina, were all in action today trying to get further at the last slam of the season.

The Williams sisters would begin on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Venus Williams was taking on Alona Bondarenko. Bondarenko can be a tricky opponent to play against but it was all Williams today. The heat and humidity did not bother her at all as she blasted through the match with a 6-2, 6-1 score. Venus will have to work hard in her next match against talented Polish player, Agnieszka Radwanska who was also an easy winner today.

Serena Williams was in action third on Arthur Ashe Stadium and had something to prove as well. Playing against crafty Ai Sugiyama, Serena looked as good as she has all tournament, almost as good as she was against Vesnina the other night. Serena over powered and outclassed Sugiyama with a 6-2, 6-1 victory and now moves on to take on the winner of the Bremond and Garbin match that was still going on at the time this was written.

Dinara Safina struggled to find her form during the night session. Losing the first set 6-3 to Timea Bacsinszky, she barely came back in the secon set and won 7-5. The final set was all Safina as she took the set and the match 6-2. It was the first bad match from Safina since her loss at the Olympics and looked vulnerable.

Tomorrow the first half of the Round of 16 matches take place with Jankovic taking on talented Wozniacki as the most anticipated match along with Dementieva taking on Na Li.

Day 5 Photos!

Dementieva,Jankovic Continue On, Davenport, Kuznetsova Fade Away!

August 29th, 2008 New York City, USA

Two of the better known players on the women's side were sent home today when both the third seed, Svetlana Kuznetsova and the 23rd seed, Lindsay Davenport lost their third round matches today. However for the other girls, it was just another day at the office as they moved towards the Round of 16.

Both Jelena Jankovic and Elena Dementieva enjoyed a sigh of relief today when their most dangerous Quarter-Finals opponents both lost. Dementieva was facing off againat surprise third rounder, Anne Keovathong of Great Britain. It was a routine match for the hard hitter from Russia. Dementieva never looked threatened as she defeated her younger opponent, 6-3, 6-4. Jelena Jankovic was facing off against recent Wimbledon Semi-Finalist, Jie Zheng. However there was no drama in this match as Jankovic seemed focused and wanting to win the match in straight sets. That is just what she did, winning 7-5, 7-5.

It wasn't so fortunate for Svetlana Kuznetsova who was facing off against Katarina Srebotnik. Kuznetsova lost the opening set 6-3, but came back to win an easy tiebreak, 7-6(1). This is where we thought Kuzzy would turn the match around and win but Srebotnik who also had a great win at Roland Garros in the third round over Serena Williams held her ground and never let up, winning the final set 6-3. The surprise of the day probably came when Lindsay Davenport fell to Marion Bartoli. Having a 3-1 lifetime edge over Bartoli, people expected Davenport's hard hitting and better movement to move on to the round of 16. It wasn't to happen, Davenport never settled in too well, probably the constant start and stop from the rain delays didn't help too much either.

Tomorrow the Williams sisters and Safina continue on with their march towards the Round of 16, and one step closer to an All Williams Quarter-Final.

Results:

Arthur Ashe Stadium:

(2)Jelena Jankovic d. Jie Zheng - 7-5, 7-5
(12)Marion Bartoli d. (23)Lindsay Davenport - 6-1, 7-6(3)

Grandstand:

(21)Caroline Wozniacki d. (14)Victoria Azarenka - 6-4, 6-4

Top 10 Seeds:

1. Ana Ivanovic - Lost Round 2 (Coin)

Day 4 Photos!

Willamses March On, Ivanovic Falters!

August 28th, 2008 New York City, USA

Day 4 of the US Open was quite the shocker on the women's side with the top seed and number one player in the world, Ana Ivanovic losing early at a Grand Slam for the second consecutive time. Ivanovic has been plagued with a thumb injury since Wimbledon and it has shown with her lackluster play over the summer. It just hasn't been the same Ana Ivanovic since her Roland Garros win in early June, perhaps the pressure has grown too great for her? Today Ivanovic experienced a lost to number 188 in the world, Julie Coin of France. Coin came out firing big serves and ground strokes, winning the first set 6-3. Ivanovic barely came back in the second set winning it 6-4. Once again in the third, Coin went up 5-2, before slightly having a mishap and after three match points closing it out 6-3 in the third. Coin moves on to face Mauresmo while Ivanovic goes home early once again to contemplate what to do for the rest of the year.

The Williams sisters had no trouble in their second round matches today. Venus was up second on Arthur Ashe Stadium against an older opponent, Rossana De Los Rios. It was a very lopsided match with Venus just overpowering and out hitting her opponent. Venus moves on with a 6-0, 6-3 victory. Serena Williams had a similar match, being very precise in her match, hitting hard and hitting less than 15 unforced errors. Serena steam rolled her way to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Elena Vesnina. Dinara Safina who is a heavy favorite now to get to the Semi-Finals also won her second round match over Roberta Vinci. Safina is looking very strong so far during this US Open.

Tomorrow third round matches begin with Jelena Jankovic, Elena Dementieva and Svetlana Kuznetsova back in action all trying to make the final 16.

Results:

Arthur Ashe Stadium:

(6)Dinara Safina d. Roberta Vinci - 6-4, 6-3

Day 3 Photos!

Dementieva, Kuznetsova, Davenport Advance, Zvonareva Falls!

August 27th, 2008 New York City, USA

The third day of the US Open kicked off today with a few Russians in action while American Lindsay Davenport was to play during the night session. Sveltana Kuznetsova had a tough start to her second round match being taken to a tiebreak by her opponent, Sorana Cirstea. The second set was more to Kuznetsova's liking as she took the match 7-6(3), 6-1. Elena Dementieva was also in action and had a pretty easy time against Pauline Parmentier, 6-2, 6-1. Demetieva is looking to make it deep into this draw. The only large upset of the day came when the Bronze medalist from the Beijing Olympics went out in the second round, 6-3, 6-3 to Tatiana Perebiynis.

Lindsay Davenport had a tough second round encounter as well. Playing off against a hard hitting opponent in Alisa Kleybanova, Davenport was leading in the first set by a break but couldn't put it away until her second oppurtunity. The second set was just as slow as the first but Davenport was a bit stronger taking the match, 7-5, 6-3. This is the first time this year Davenport has reached the third round of a major after losing to Sharapova in Australia and retiring at Wimbledon. Jelena Jankovic had a very tough time earlier in the day, almost losing her match up. Struggling with nerves and rusty match play, the number 2 player had to go the distance to close out her match against Sofia Arvidsson. Jankovic usually struggles to get better at the majors.

Tomorrow Ana Ivanovic, and the Williams Sisters come back for their second round matches. Each are looking to progress towards the weekend.
