January 6th, 2008

Gold Coast, Australia and Auckland, New Zealand

The WTA TOUR kicked off its 2008 season this week down under with the Mondial Australian Women's Hardcourts and ASB Classic events. The two tournaments which are rather small, a Tier III and a Tier IV respectively still featured some big named players. Familiar names such as Patty Schynder, Nicole Vaidasova, Na Li, and Lindsay Davenport were all on hand.

The winners of the event were Na Li of China, who won her first singles title since capturing the Guangzhou tournament back in 2004. This was her second overall title in her career. She defeated Victoria Azarenka in the Finals, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Her prize money was a nice $28,000 dollars.

Lindsay Davenport returned to action after winning 3 events last year, but decided to play in Auckland New Zealand. Davenport who had only lost set during the entire event looked amazing and crisp in her form leading up to the Australian Open in just a weeks time. Davenport who didn't face much competition and was never in doubt of winning the title. Davenport defeated Aravane Rezai in the Finals, 6-2, 6-2. With the win, Davenport moves to 8th all time on the list for most titles in a career with 54, ahead of Monica Seles' 53. Davenport earned $22,900 dollars.
