Safina Wins Montreal, Us Open Series, Wozniacki Wins First Title in Sweden!
August 3rd, 2008 Montreal, Canada and Stockholm, Sweden
The WTA Tour came to its final stops before the 2008 Beijing Olympics next week. This week the tour stopped for a Tier I event in Montreal for the Rogers Cup and in Stockholm for the Tier IV Nordea Nordic Light Open.
Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport were both supposed to play in Montreal but pulled out prior to the event. Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic were the top two seeds and stars in Canada, but both suffered early losses. Jankovic however did a round better and will now overtake the Number 1 spot on August 11th. It was Dinara Safina who had just been a winner in Los Angeles who stepped up to the plate and showed off her good hardcourt form to take the entire event. Safina also won the US Open Series by clinching Montreal. This is Safina's third title of the year after wins in Berlin and Los Angeles. She defeated Dominika Cibulkova 6-2, 6-1.
In Sweden, Caroline Wozniacki finally showed her promise as she stormed to the title and captured her first WTA event. It was a sweet moment for Caroline who has been having decent results all season but hasn't pushed through to win until this week. She defeated Vera Dushevina 6-0, 6-2.
Next week the tour stops in Cincinnati for the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open and as well in Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympics. With all the big stars there, it should be a good week of tennis.
